Summer is ideal for discovering the Netherlands by bike. There is so much to discover and with a bike you see much more than when you drive a car. I have selected a number of nice cycling routes for you.
Met this route you cycle around the IJsselmeer. You will pass Amsterdam, the Afsluitdijk and Kampen. The cycle path over the Afsluitdijk is 32 kilometers long and can be tough when there is a lot of wind. If you like a challenge, this route is for you.
Once you are in Kampen, a visit to Dolly’s dinner well worth it. This is a vegan restaurant inspired by American Diner. You can go here for things like American pancakes, cheesecakes and milkshakes. Please note that Dolly’s diner is closed Monday through Wednesday.
There is also plenty to do in Kampen, such as visiting the Ketelmeer, Zwarte Meer, National Park Weerribben-Wieden or Drontermeer. The Weerribben-Wieden National Park is the largest peat area in northwestern Europe.
Met this route you can relax in between and cool off in the water. This route can also be a challenge if there is a lot of wind. The entire route is 610 kilometers long. The route starts in Cadzand-Bad and ends in Bad Nieuweschans.
You pass the islands of South Holland and Zeeland. In Zeeland you can enjoy a terrace and eat a good basis of Zeeland specialties, such as Zeeland oysters or Oosterschelde lobsters. This way you have enough energy during your bike ride.
Eleven Cities Route
If you are a fan of the Elfstedentocht, this is a very nice route. You will pass all the places of the Elfstedentocht, such as Harlingen, Bolsward and Sneek. This way you can empathize a bit with the skaters. The long version of this route is 325 kilometers. In Friesland you can have typical Frisian snacks such as Frisian Duimpjes and Oranjekoek.
You will cycle past special museums, Frisian lakes and various terraces. Besides cycling, take enough time to discover Friesland.
